Eric Knaub owns and operates Roy’s Yard & Haul & More, offering complete landscape maintenance service. “No job too big or small: We do it all!” reads Eric’s brochure. So who is the Roy of Roy’s Yard & Haul?
Well, Roy is Eric’s father. “My father and I were both professional salesmen,” Eric explained. “Salesmen notoriously have pet projects. Dad retired from Levitz furniture a while back, but he continued part time in his extra job as a tax prepare. He also continued doing yard work.”
Eric was in charge of customer relations at Suburban Ford for five years, but like a lot of people he lost his job when the economy fell apart in 2008. “Economy and automation took out a whole department. It was too easy to get a computer to do much of what I did.”
Five years ago Roy—Eric’s dad—came up with the idea of a landscaping business. We bought the equipment— a couple of mowers, a couple of weed eaters, a couple of pickups and a couple of trailers—and went to work. Eric eventually bought a full-sized Ford F-150.
A friend told Eric, “Guys like you are like fleas—you’re everywhere. What makes you different? How do you stay so busy at a time when so many are trying to find jobs?”
To begin with, Eric says, “Failure is not an option with me. That’s not just a slogan: that’s how I live my life. I focus on my clients more than I focus on my work. Look, anybody can do the work that I do—it just takes a little bit of skill. It all depends on how I treat my clients.”
He said he learned a long time ago that if you take care of your customers, they’ll take care of you and tell others about the job you do for them. “I treat you like you’re my friend—like you’re a name, not a number. I tell my customers, ‘If you’re happy, I’m happy.’”
Eric employs some part-time casual labor, but mostly he’s out there himself, working seven days a week. “Once when I was down and didn’t have much hope, somebody gave me a shot at success, and to show my gratitude, I want to do the best job I can every day of my life. I’ll get the job done the way you want it, and I’ll save you money.”
“I understand there are a thousand people who do what I do, but there are few who are truly family owned and operated and will treat you like one of their own. A job not worth doing well…is not worth doing.
Here’s a partial list of the jobs Roy’s Yard and Haul is able to do for you: Mowing, Edging, Weeding, Bark dusting, Pruning, Hedging, Chainsaw Work,Blackberry Removal, Brush Clearing, Hauling, Dump Runs, House Cleaning, Power washing, Garage Organization, Pet Sitting/Dog Walking, Deliveries, Gutters, Window Washing…..
